One of the other benefits of receiving the Influenza vaccine and avoiding the "flu" is that our immune system stays stronger. Individuals during Influenza have a lower white blood cell count. The Influenza virus kills our lymphocytes. These are the White Blood Cells responsible for making antibodies to protect us from infection. Our immunity is weakened by Influenza and it takes 2 to 3 months to recover. The result is after the Influenza, patients are often sick from other wintertime infections. If your child receives the Influenza vaccine, they will be better able to protect themselves from all the other infectious diseases that occur during the fall and winter months. This leads to a healthier year, less sick days and less visits to our office (not that we don't love to see you!).
We offer both the non-live, preservative free Influenza vaccine by injection and the Flumist-live virus-Nasal Influenza vaccine. If your child is under age 9 and has never received the Influenza vaccine, the first time he/she receives it, they must return in 30 to 40 days to receive a second dose to maintain their protection for the entire year. If your child has received the Influenza vaccine in the past and are under age 9, they only need a single dose. There are certain circumstances where if your child did receive the vaccine in the past and received only a single dose that they may have to get 2 doses this year to be fully vaccinated. Your doctor will advise you if your child is in this group. All patients age 9 and above only need a single dose of the Influenza vaccine.
The Flumist Nasal Influenza Vaccine is available to patients age 2 and above and the patient must not have a history of recurrent wheezing, asthma, immune deficiency or Cystic Fibrosis. For these patients the non-live injectable vaccine is recommended.
